Elephants are the largest land mammals on earth, with distinctly massive bodies, large ears, and long trunks. Greyish to brown in colour, their body hair is sparse and coarse. Found most often in savannahs, grasslands, forests, deserts, swamps, and highlands in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. Asian elephants differ in several ways from their African relatives, in more than 10 distinct physical ways. One is that the Asian elephants’ ears are smaller compared to the large fan-shaped ears of the African species.
