Caracals are medium-sized big cats with distinct ears—they are completely black with long tufts of sensitive hairs that detect vibrations and help them catch their prey. The caracal uses these vibrations to sense ripples in the air when a bird takes off — and leaps up to swat it with its paws! Caracals also use their ears to express themselves and hear frequencies much lower than humans’ typical hearing range.
